One of the biggest pita’s in migrating users to a SBS 2003 domain is migrating Windows user profiles. Sure, SBS has the http://servername/connectcomputer wizard which migrates profiles, but something always seems to go wrong whenever I use that wizard to perform user profile migration.
I found a link to ForensIT’s User Profile Wizard on Susan’s blog. I had previously used this tool to migrate my profile when I got a new computer, and the program worked great. It’s free for personal use, and can be run from the command line.
Corporate pricing is available, and I think the $2.00 per seat licensing is reasonable, especially considering how many problems I’ve experienced with profile migration in the past. The corporate version includes the User Profile Wizard Deployment kit, which generates customizable installation scripts.
User Profile Wizard runs on Windows 2000, XP, and Vista.
