Earlier I wrote about random network weirdness I’ve been experiencing where new eDirectory users created in the past week couldn’t login to the network, regardless of which machine or client they were using, or which WAN link they were on. No errors show up in the event logs, and dstrace shows no eDirectory errors. The only message the Novell client gives the affected user is that the user name or password is incorrect.
The problem was worse today, so the local network admin made resolving this issue today’s priority, and he came up with a solution and is working on a theory about what the cause of the problem is. Somehow he came across TID 10073137 (written over four years ago about Netware 6 servers!) and saw in the notes section of the TID that uninstalling and reinstalling NICI on the workstation was a workaround. He did just that, rebooted, and the login problems vanished. I think I owe him a beer.
I would love to hear someone’s theory on why this worked, especially since all the workstations are at the same Windows patch level and run Novell client 4.91 SP3 or SP4. Plus, the TID says this problem was fixed in Novell Client 4.83 SP2, which was released about five years ago.
